If you’re new to the journaling community, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with lingo from people who have been around it forever. Or maybe you’ve dedicated yourself to one notebook type and have never gone astray so you have no clue what people are talking about.
Here are some basics for when we talk about notebooks.
A5
This is the most popular notebook size. It’s about the size of a paperback and can go about anywhere with you. Leuchtturm1917, Archer & Olive, Moleskine (close enough), etc. They’re about 8.3 inches long and 5.8 inches wide.
A5 Slim/Standard Traveler’s Notebook
These are as tall as an A5 but not as wide, around 4.3 inches wide.
A6
These notebooks are small and portable. They come in at about 5.8 inches high and 4.1 inches long. Hobonichi, Stalogy, Leuchtturm1917, and most popular brands make notebooks this size. They’re easy to come by.
Passport
These are the same size as a passport. Traveler’s Notebooks are very popular for this size. Obviously, it could fit in your pocket to whip out whenever needed. About 4.9 inches x 3.5 inches.
Pocket is different from Passport but not by much. They are not really interchangeable because the width is the same but the pockets are taller. About 5.5 inches x 3.5 inches.
B6
More popular in other countries, the B6 notebook is in between an A6 and A5. Midori and a few other brands make B6 slim. Leuchtturm1917 makes a B6+. More brands are giving this option, but it’s not as easily available in stores. They normally come in about 7 inches x 5 inches but check the notebook measurements before buying, especially if you’re trying to fit it into a cover.
Weeks
Hobonichi brand is popular for their weeks size planner and it seems to be catching on with other retailers as well. It’s slim and portable, clocking in at 7.4 inches x 3.75 inches.
Cahier
Moleskine thin, soft-cover notebooks are popular in this size. 8.25 inches x 5 inches. They are great for short projects or inserts that aren’t bulky in a traveler’s.
Of course these aren’t all the notebook sizes available the more small brands get into the notebook space. What is the size of notebook you buy the most?
