We want you to get to know some of the members in Houston Journal Society. Meet Bre.
- Name: Breonna (usually just Bre though)
- Pronouns: She/Her
- Social Media: @brewritesetc (Instagram)
Are you a native Houstonian?
Yes!
How did you first get into stationery? And how long have you been into it?
Always. I’ve always had a tote bag on me since I was a kid. But in Middle School (Johnston!) we got these pencil and notebook vending machines and I was immediately obsessed.
What is your current journal/planner style? Do you have a preferred journaling style (e.g., bullet journaling, art journaling, daily journaling)?
I am a bullet journal user for about 6? 7 years? I dabble with other styles of journaling always, but I can’t quit a bujo. B6 dot grid notebooks have my whole heart.
Do you have a favorite pen and what is it?
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Do you have any tips for beginners just starting their journaling journey?
Social media is the best and the worst thing. It makes you want to immediately buy everything but then you are overwhelmed with how to use it. I actually get the best inspiration from people in person. Talking to them about how they use their supplies helps you figure out what works for you. And don’t beat yourself up if something doesn’t work for you.
Do you prefer digital or analog journaling, and why?
Analog. I’ve tried multiple times to do digital journaling because it looks so cute (see how social media doesn’t help) but I just can not keep up with it and my phone is always in my hand. I just need to write it down otherwise it’s gone from my brain forever.
How often do you journal, and do you have a specific routine or time of day for it?
I’ve tried morning pages. I’ve tried every day journaling. What works for me is ten minutes at a time as needed. But if you really want to use your journal, you have to keep it nearby. That’s really what gets me to use up the pages. I jot down anything that comes to mind. That all counts
Do you use your journal for any specific purposes, like goal-setting or mental health?
I’ve learned that just writing the details of the day works best for me. It’s amazing to go back and see what I thought was some small detail or note years later.
What are your hobbies other than stationery and journaling?
Writing and photography. Lately, I’ve kicked my analog habits up a notch and have gotten back into film photography.
How did you find HJS?
I’m in Dromgoole’s just about every other Saturday and ended up chatting with everyone in there (happens when you’re in there for hours) and someone mentioned the group being started so of course I joined immediately.
Have you learned anything, changed your journaling habits, or been enabled since joining HJS?
HA! Have I?! My fountain pen collection has skyrocketed since joining HJS and I’m not upset about it. The group may say that I have done my fair share of enabling as well.
Have you ever had a “stationery emergency”? What happened?
Spring 2020 there were whispers of MUJI shutting down and I panic ordered a dozen 0.5 blue-black gel pens because I didn’t know if we would ever be able to get them again cause who knew how the world would work out.
Do you have a favorite coffee shop or journaling spot? Where? What do you like about it?
Right now I really enjoy the Slowpokes on Memorial. It’s a little busy on the weekends but they have real food and coffee, but you can also go in the evening for a glass of wine or beer.
